Morphology

Morphology is a field of linguistics that focused on analysis and examination of meaningful units of forms which make up sentences. Morphemes is the smallest units of a language. There are two types of morphemes:
1. Free morphemes, that is morphemes which can stand by themselves as single words, e.g. open and tour. Free morphemes can classified into two types:
a. Lexical morphemes is that set off ordinary nouns, adjectives and verbs which we think of as the words which carry the content of message we convey, e.g. house, long, yellow, follow.
b. Functional morphemes, that is consist largely of the functional words in the language such as conjunction, preposition, articles and pronouns, e.g. and, when, in.
2. Bound morphemes, that is those which cannot normally stand alone, but which are typically attached to another form, e.g. re-, -ist, -ed, -s. Bound morphemes can classified into two types:
a. Derivational morphemes, that is used to make new words in the language and are often used to make words of a different grammatical category from the steam, e.g. –ness in the word good become goodness.
b. Inflectional morphemes, that is not used to produce new words in the English language, but rather to indicate aspects of the grammatical function of a word. In English, all infectional morphemes listed here suffixes: Noun + : -‘s, -s, Verb + : -s, -ing, -ed, -en, Adjective + : -est, - er.
Allomorphs is one of two or more complementary morphs which manifest a morpheme in its different phonological or morphological environments. Examples: The plural morpheme in English, usually written as ‘-s’, has at least three allomorphs: [-s] as in books /buks/, [-z] as in pencils /pensilz/ and [-iz] asin glasses /gla:siz/. Other examples of allomorphs of the English plural morpheme such as, (man/men, mouse/mice).
